I got my number, 2050, from the year that the G8 has promised (cross-their-hearts-and-hope-to-die) to reach bare-minimum emission reduction targets.
This organization, 350, got its number from:
the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide—measured in “Parts Per Million” in our atmosphere. 350 PPM—it’s the number humanity needs to get back to as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. [We’re at 387 PPM.]
350 is an international organization that is building a movement to get below the “red line” of carbon dioxide. Their global approach speaks volumes, even when they don’t say a word.
One of their allies is the “Green Long March,” China’s largest youth conservation movement. Check out the video about their work.
350 has asked supporters to show solidarity during the Olympics by uploading a picture of themselves doing a sports activity while holding a sign reading “350.” They’ve also recruited sports stars to the cause. Obviously I shall be participating: have Rollerblades, will skate in solidarity!
I learned about both 350 and the Green Long March from Jan Adams of Happening Here?, who writes: “Maybe young Chinese can lead the way against suicide by global warming.”
