The Farm-City Partnership
Amy Hepworth, the “cult hero” farmer that supplies the Park Slope Food Coop with a startling array of mostly organic vegetables and minimally-treated fruits, including some of the most delicious apples I’ve ever tasted, has said “we would not have a farm if it wasn’t for Park Slope.”
Her current crusade to save energy on her 400-acre farm about 90 miles up the Hudson has given her an appreciation for the efficiency of high-density urban living. She told members of the Coop: “I’m dedicated to feeding you people because you don’t have land yourself, but you’re an efficient organism.”
This mutually beneficial relationship between food producers and consumers living within 100 miles of each other and balancing each others’ energy usage is one of the reasons why I’m proud to be a Coop member.
It doesn’t hurt that the food is cheaper, tastier, and of better quality and variety than anything else in the city. And we know I love my food.
